- First United Methodist Church of Valdese member Sandy Dyer is offering a bi-monthly vegan cooking class. Dyer wants to share new ways to prepare food and invites people to come and taste some of the delicious foods in vegan cooking. Classes will be held at the church at 6:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of the month in the fellowship hall for $5 per person. Call 430-1838.
- Pleasant View Baptist Church  mission barbeque will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $6.50 per person. Menu includes baked beans, slaw, roll and dessert. -The Longtown Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will have a barbecue and bluegrass gospel spring fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Whipporwill Dairy featuring the Leonard McSwain Band and Bluegrass Gospel Tones. Plates are $8 for adults and $5 for kids 10 and under. Bring a chair and enjoy the fellowship.
- Denton’s Chapel United Methodist Church, US 64 SW, will host a pork barbecue/smoked chicken dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Dine in or take out.
- Gospel singing at Faith Temple at 7 p.m. with special guest, The Gospel Travelers.

- Adoration Choir of Morganton and Entouch Choir of First Church of God in Lenoir, (the Rev. Venoy Pearson, pastor) will present a joint gospel music concert at 7 p.m. today at the First Church of God, Lenoir.
Sunday
- Nikiti Koloff, former world championship wrestler, will be at Hopewell Baptist Church. He will be speaking during the morning and evening services. He retired from professional wrestling when he was 33 years old and became a Christian in October of 1993, spent four years undergoing intense mentoring and discipleship and began a full-time, faith-based ministry. -Faith Free Will Baptist Church on Jamestown Road will have Homecoming services with Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. with worship to follow with guest speaker the Rev. Donnie Dingess, paster of Northview Free Will Baptist Church in Statesville. The congregation would like to invite all past and present members to attend. - The First Advent Christian Church of 211 Lenoir Road will celebrate its 111th year anniversary at 11 a.m. Memorial slides, special music and a timely anniversary message will acknowledge the rich spiritual heritage of the church. - Dr. J.C. Mitchell, interim pastor at Calvin Heights Baptist Church, will be speaking on “Christian maturity — Living by the word of God and not your emotions” at the 11 a.m. service. At 6 p.m. Mitchell will be doing a verse by verse study of the book of Philippians.

- The Christian Business Men’s Connection (www.cbmc.com) of Burke County meets for lunch at noon each Tuesday in the Morganton Community House. This is a non-denominational event that is open to the public. There are no membership fees or requirements and reservations are not required. - Burke United Christian Ministries announces night assistance for working families and seniors without transportation from 5 to 7 p.m. on every second and third Tuesday night of the month. Assistance provided includes food, clothing, emergency financial assists and soup kitchen meals. Basic eligibility requirements are proof of employment, at least 30 hours. Picture ID required for new clients. Financial assists require utility disconnect notices. Clients will be seen on first-come, first-served basis.
Wednesday

- Outreach Wednesdays are the second, third and fourth Wednesday of each month at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. The church will have a meal to help those who work be able to make church and eat a hot meal.
- “Knitwits,” a prayer shawl ministry at Oak Hill United Methodist Church, invites anyone who knits, crochets or does other lapwork of any skill level or desiring to learn from 6:30 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday in the fellowship hall. -The Joy Group (Just Older Youth) of Drexel First Baptist Church is expanding its membership. Rehearsals are at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday. Members of the choir are comprised of individuals from seven different churches throughout the area. Lunch always follows the rehearsal as well as bingo and trips are always being scheduled throughout the year. New members are always welcome.

- Carolina Style Chorus is expanding its chorus membership. Rehearsals will be held at 7 p.m. every Thursday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Conover. -Area ministers and one guest are invited to a dinner at the Morganton Community House at 6:30 p.m. on May 23. The director of golf operations at Quaker Meadows Golf Course will be speaking to guests about ways they can help their churches and ministries raise funds.Contact Jimmy Queen at 437-7677 to RSVP.
- The Nehemiah Center will sponsor a Boys-To-Men mentoring program fishing adventure weekend May 23 and 24 that includes Christian fellowship, Bible study, music, food, games and overnight lodging in log cabins. Fathers, brothers, grandfathers, cousins and elders are all invited to this free event and transportation will be provided. Call 413-2818. This program is designed to help our young males become men and to appreciate our environment.
- St. Matthews United Methodist Church is putting together a building team to go to Bayou la Batre, Ala. to help rebuild areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina from May 25 to 31. -Good Samaritan Clinic needs your help. With the start of their Medical Day Clinic comes the need for front office volunteers to perform basic office duties. They also need screeners to verify patient eligibility. Both positions can be two to five hour shifts with times/days varying. The goal is to have volunteer coverage from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Stop by the office at 305 W. Union St. to pick up a volunteer application.
-The Nehemiah Center is now accepting registration from young men who want to take part in The Nehemiah 8:10 Program, which will work with youth seven to 13 years old. This program will include career guidance, communication and social skills, fishing, mountain climbing, train and plane rides, camping and other activities throughout the year that will engage the minds and spirits of youth. -North Morganton United Methodist Wee School has begun registration for the 2008-09 school year. Classes are for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. A parents morning out drop in day care program is offered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Call Sharon at 437-3418.
